For this last module, I’d like you to put yourself in the shoes of a presidential advisor and think about America’s foreign policy priorities. A key debate in American foreign policy has been whether the United States should engage in trade or offer any kind of military support to nations with well-documented human rights abuses that are contrary to democracy. This question has come to the fore again as the U.S. under President Trump has renewed its engagement with non-democratic countries such as Saudi Arabia in the Middle East and its support for authoritarian leaders in Russia, the Philippines, and Turkey. If you were to advise President Trump, would you suggest that America’s interests are best-served by ignoring human-rights abuses and democratic restrictions in these countries? Or are they better served by holding these leaders accountable to democratic standards and respect for civil liberties? Write a 250-word response, justifying your viewpoint. Your response should include a link to a scholarly article that supports your viewpoint. Any response that does not or that is incomplete, will receive 0 points.
