Despite the controversial nature of laws similar to the USA PATRIOT Act, many people have argued that the War on Terror has changed the world, and certain security measures have become necessary. Acts of terror on American soil such as the Boston bombing and the San Bernardino shooting have renewed these discussions. According to some, Americans are willing to trade Civil Liberties for security. But which rights are Americans willing to surrender? Below are a list of the rights some have said Americans could give up in the fight against terror: 1)Search a suspect’s home without a warrant 2)Tap any telephones a suspect could use 3)Keep a suspect’s computer/Internet use under surveillance 4)Put a suspect in prison indefinitely without specific charges while it looks for evidence 5)Listen in on a suspect’s conversations with his/her lawyer 6)Use hearsay evidence against a suspect in his/her trial 7)Prevent a suspect from appealing the decision Post a response discussing which powers you would be okay giving to the federal government in order to keep Americans safe from terrorism.
