The instructor shall discuss Patients’ Rights and Informed Consent and shall focus on methods of assuring patients’ rights while observing the informed consent requirements and protocols of the healthcare organization. Included as part of the lecture shall be the Federal Patient Self-Determination Act, Florida Statute 765 (Advanced Directives), and the expectations of the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations. Also addressed shall be advanced directives, the appointment of a healthcare surrogate, and the importance of having a living will. Following the presentation, each student shall be asked to prepare a two page outline of what should be conveyed to each affected patient and/or family members regarding these subjects. The outline shall be spaced at 1.5 and shall employ a Times New Roman 12 point font.
