Introduction
The United States Government Publishing Office (GPO) is a recognizable agency under the legislative branch in the U.S. federal government. The agency got formed in 1861 under the name United States Government Printing Office (Gary, 2014). The agency headquarters are in 732 North Capitol St. NW Washington, D.C. It has more than 1900 employees working with a motto titled ‘Keeping America Informed.’
Under the motto stated above, GPO mission is to inform Americans by acting as the official, digital as well as secure source of information related to producing, distributing and preserving Federal Government publications for Congress Federal agencies besides the American citizen. GPO’s vision is to have an informed nation with convenient as well as reliable access to government information through numerous services the agency offers. The core values guiding the include customer service, commitment, diversity, innovation, integrity, as well as teamwork (Government Printing Office, n.d.).
GPO goals of the agency are to exceed stakeholder’s expectation by the quality of services, enhancing access to government information, and promoting innovation and collaboration within government (Government Printing Office, n.d.). Also, it aims at strengthening the agency position as a government authority of publishing and engaging its employees in enhancing internal operations.
Functions of the Agency
The main functions of GPO comprise of producing and distributing data services for the federal government in all its three branches. It also produces passports for the Department of State, all White House publications as well as distributes information for other Federal agencies requiring print format information (Government Printing Office, n.d.). GPO runs the Federal Depository Library Program and ‘/govinfo/’ some permanent platform of providing the public with Federal Government information without any charge (U.S. Government Printing Office, n.d.). Finally, the agency runs various distribution centers which have the mandate of fulfilling government publication orders.
Current Events
GPO runs various events as per the agency mission of keeping the public informed. Currently, GPO is digitizing public papers of the presidents. GPO has collaboration with the National Archives’ Office of the Federal Register (OFR) to digitize Public Papers. The digitization covers the papers for Presidents starting from Herbert Hoover (1929) to George H.W. Bush (1990) (Government Printing Office, n.d.).
Also, the agency is publishing the different bills and proceeding undergoing in Congress. It is in partnership with the house leadership in publishing report debated in the Houses of representative and the Senate. GPO is currently running the Federal Depository Library aiming to offer information about government business to the general public.
Rationale
The United States Government Publishing Office a vital agency for the federal government. No government can work without giving information to its citizens. The reasons for choosing this agency include the potential to connect all branches of the federal government. GOP distributes and publishes all information in the branches of the U.S. government and its ability to hold all digital data concerning help in strategic planning. Information remains a powerful influencer in reaching any planning.
Most independent agencies rely on the services provided by GPO. Just like the vital function, it holds in federal communications, GPO collaborates with other agencies in sharing ideas and information about corporate duties and responsibilities. It acts as a connecting factor with information publishing and dissemination. Lastly, through its departments, the agency enhances public knowledge. The Federal Depository Library provides updated information about other agencies and the government, which helps information seekers with relevant facts when undertaking decision making and strategic planning.
