Instructions for Doing the Factor Comparison Job Evaluation Exercise

· Job specifications are listed for the following positions: Universal teller,

Deposit Service Representative, File Clerk, Coin Processor, Document Sorter,

Statement Bookkeeper, Secretary (Trust), Switchboard Operator, Supervisor,

Supervisor (universal teller), and Staff Accountant.

· Job descriptions for these same positions follow.

· Note: The Universal Teller, File Clerk, Switchboard Operator and Supervisor,

Universal Tellers – Main office are the position known as “benchmark“jobs

in this exercise. How do I know? They are the ones with salaries listed for

them.

· Using the universal factors by Benge (Working conditions, Mental Demands,

Physical Demands, Skill, and Responsibility) create a master schedule by first

ranking the positions on each dimension and then breaking up the salaries

across the dimensions so that they add to their total wage.

· Then take only two other positions and try to come up with wages for them

using the master schedule.

Job Specifications

1. Universal Teller . Requires occasion direction and checking of work. Does not require frequent exercise of independent judgment. Demands substantial public contact, but infrequent intrabank contact. Offers few physical demands and few unpleasant working conditions. Requires a high degree of concentration. Requires 2 to 3 months of on-the-job training. Requires use of general banking equipment, pneumatic units, and teller machines, calls for typing, finger dexterity, and human relations skills.

2. Deposit Services Representative : Requires occasional independent judgment and some direction and checking of work. Demands substantial public contact but infrequent intrabank contact. Requires a high degree of concentration, however has physical demands and few unpleasant working conditions. Requires about 2 to 3 months of on-the-job training. Involves use of general banking equipment, and calls for typing and human relations skills.

3. File Clerk : Requires little independent judgment and infrequent direction and checking of work. Demands little public or intrabank contact. Calls for a high degree of concentration, but has light physical demand with little or no unpleasant working conditions. Requires 1 week of on-the-job training. Requires use of general banking equipment, and demands finger dexterity skills.

4. Coin Processor : Necessitates little exercise of independent judgment. Requires infrequent direction, however, work is frequently checked. Demands little public or intrabank contact. Requires a moderate degree of concentration with moderate physical demands and few unpleasant working conditions (some machinery noise). Requires 1 month of on-the-job training to perform the job at an acceptable level. Calls for operation of general banking equipment, coin wrapper, and postage machines.

5. Document Sorter : Requires occasional direction, but work is infrequently checked. Calls for infrequent exercise of independent judgment. Demands little public or intrabank contact. Requires a high degree of concentration, with light physical demands (occasional heavy lifting) and moderate amount of unpleasant working conditions (machine noise). Calls for 1 to 3 months of on-the-job training to perform the job at an acceptable level. Requires the necessary finger dexterity skills to operate the document sorter, proof machine, and general banking equipment.

6. Statement Bookkeeper : Requires occasional direction and checking of work, entails infrequent independent judgment and little public or intrabank contact. Demands moderate degree of concentration with little physical demand or unpleasant working conditions. Requires training period of 1 to 3 months. Calls for typing skills and use of general banking equipment and teller machines.

7. Secretary (Trust ). Requires infrequent exercise of independent judgment, and requires occasional direction and checking of work. Demands some public and intrabank contact. Requires a moderate degree of concentration. Offers few physical demands and few or no unpleasant working conditions. Requires 2 to 3 months of on-the-job training. Involves the use of general banking equipment and transcribing equipment. Calls for general secretarial skills, including shorthand.

8. Switchboard Operator . Requires little independent judgment on the part of the employee. Calls for little direction and infrequent checking of work. Demands substantial public contact but infrequent intrabank contact. Demands little or no extraordinary concentration. Makes few physical demands with little or no unpleasant working conditions. Requires less than 1 month of training. Calls for use of general banking equipment and the PBX. Requires telephone communication skills.

9. Supervisor, Universal Tellers : Requires occasional independent judgment and needs occasional direction and checking of work. Demands frequent public contact but little intrabank contact beyond the tellers. Requires high degree of concentration, but makes few physical demands and offers few or no unpleasant working conditions. Requires about 2 to 3 months of training. Involves working with general banking equipment, pneumatic units, and teller machines. Demands typing, finger dexterity, and human relations skills.

10. Staff Accountant : Requires occasional independent judgment and needs occasional direction and checking of work. Demands little public or intrabank contact.
