One of the following topics: Topic#1: the right to self-defense and Gaza (Was Israel’s Operation Protective Edge in 2014 in line with the right to self defence?) Topic#2: Gaza, Israel and R2P (How and to what extent is R2P relevant to the conflict between Gaza and Israel? Could it add something and be useful?) Topic#3: Gaza, Israel and the veto power (Is the Gaza/Israel conflict a good example for why the veto power of the P5 should be limited when international crimes are being committed?) I expect the students to: – focus on the law – not the history, politics, feelings, etc. – identify/name/apply and interpret relevant norms – refer to the law throughout your essay (= use and cite relevant (parts of) treaty provisions, resolutions, judgements, etc.) – think/use: sovereignty, interpretation, sources, state practice etc 9-10 pages of actual text – focus on analysis (not description/background) – introduction, factual summary and conclusion = no more than max. 2 pages in total Make sure to also use primary sources including e.g. – SC meeting records, SR/COI/HRC mandates, etc. – statements and reports by UN Secretary General, Special Advisers, Human Rights Council, member states etc. – judgements plus e.g. diss./sep.opinions & other court material – how states (and others) justify, explain etc. certain actions
